Shel Silverstein had many other arts besides just writing poems. He also loved writing songs, writing books, music, composing, drawing cartoons, and screenwriting. Shel Silverstein was a cartoonist for Pacific Stars and Stripes. He also was hired as a cartoonist for many popular poems. Later on he wrote a album called Hairy Jazz. Some of the songs in this album are Ragged but Right, Pass me By, and Kitchen Man. Shel Silverstein loved to do a lot of artistic and entertaining things. He was very good at what he did.
Shel Silverstein attended Theodore Roosevelt High School. He also attend three universities. The first university he attended was University of Illinois. Unfortunately he was expelled from this university. The second university he attended was Chicago Academy of Fine Arts. The last university he attended was Roosevelt University. He attended this university for three years until he got drafted to the military in 1953.
Shel Silverstein wrote poetry mostly for children, but all ages enjoy his wonderful writing. His poetry is very creative and interesting. He writes lots of poems that are silly and humorous. Shel also loved being a musician, composer, cartoonist, and screen writer. He won a few awards for his great work such as being in the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2002 and a Grammy award for the best country song in 1970. No poets at this time really inspired his poems and other writings, he created his own strategy and way of writing. An interesting fact about Shel Silverstein was that he served in the military in the Korean War. While he was in Korea he worked as a cartoonist for Pacific Stars and Stripes. At age 69, Shel Silverstein passed away on May 10, 1999. People of all ages still enjoy his books, poems, and songs today.
